Bobby Switzer, vice president of operations, said the signs are mostly coming from company sites in the Midwest and will be trucked to two Florida-based humanitarian organizations, Compassion Alliance and Food for the Poor. Those agencies will get the signs in the hands of the people who need them most, he said.
Keeler Iron Works of Memphis, Tenn., one of Lamar’s billboard structure fabricators, is sharing the shipping cost. Lamar traditionally recycles its vinyl signs. But in times of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Switzer says the company donates them for use as shelters or to cover damaged roofs.
